Scanex Begins Testing of a Ground-Based Receiving Station for Data Acquisition from CubeSat Satellites

08 October 2020
SCANEX Group supported by the Innovation Assistance Foundation completes the first developing stage of ground receiving stations designed to receive data from low-orbit 10.5 GHz satellites used within the "On Planet Duty" program. The receiving station is fully prepared for testing in November-December 2020.

In 2020, SCANEX began (More information can be found here) retrofitting the UniScan station in order for it to receive and process signal transmitted by CubeSat satellites, which is a burning issue, since nowadays an increasing number of projects aimed at encouraging children and youth to participate in scientific, technological and innovation activity, involve ultra-small ERS satellites of CubeSat format. In Russia, for instance, participants of the "On Planet Duty" program actively use said technology, while there is no ground receiving stations with characteristics required to receive data from CubeSat satellites, which significantly hinders the program development. The SCANEX project is a part of the solution to the problem.

As of now, the first stage of the project is completed: a combined antenna feeder for operation in 8 and 10.5 GHz frequency bands is designed and manufactured; the antenna system is retrofitted; cable joint and the commutation system are modified; the receiving system is equipped with a serial demodulator/decoder of DVB-S2 signal, etc.

Retrofitting of the ground-based receiving station for data acquisition from low-orbit satellites in the 10.5 GHz frequency band will expand the "On Planet Duty" program encouraging more children and young people to participate, as well as fostering a better technological, educational and scientific program.

"On Planet Duty" program brings together technological competitions and projects aimed at schoolchildren and students in the field of space science. Its goal is to promote research and technology development in the field among youth and pupils in Russia. The organizers of the program are Innovation Assistance Foundation, Education Foundation "Talent and Success" (Sirius center), Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, Children’s Workshop Movement and Roscosmos State Corporation for Space Activities.
