Russia - ScanEx Research & Development Center, receiving RS data to its own ground stations, has summarized preliminary results of 2008 imagery season. Within this season the ScanEx Center carried out the reception and processing of data from IRS-P6, SPOT 2,4 (5,8-55 m resolution) and EROS-A, EROS-B, IRS-P5 satellites (70 cm – 2,5 m), as well as from RADARSAT-1 and ENVISAT-1 radar satellites.

The 2007 results revealed that the most efficient imaging mode, providing full and quick coverage of the Russian Federation with updated images, is the long-swath (no-request) mode of acquiring images from SPOT 2,4 satellites. This year according to agreements signed between ScanEx Center and satellite operators, Indian IRS-P6 and IRS-P5, along with the French RS satellites, started to do imaging of the Russian territory in long-swath imaging mode, thus enabling to significantly expedite the creation of complete coverage of Russia with updated HR data (2,5 – 10 m).

Results of the IRS-P6, -P5 and SPOT 2,4 satellites imagery are illustrated further in this document as Russian territory footprint maps of cloud free scenes for the current year.

During 2008 imagery season Text to be hyperlinked Resourcesat (IRS-P6) delivered images of almost the entire territory of Russia. Blank spots in Central Siberia are because Text to be hyperlinked IRS-P6 data have been acquired only since mid March this year.

Launched in October 2003 the IRS-P6 satellite has been in operational mode since spring 2004. The satellite is equipped with LISS-4 scanner enabling to receive Earth images at spatial resolution of 5.8 m both in mono and multi-spectral modes. In its turn, the AWiFS sensor of this satellite allows receiving images of 55 m resolution in swath width of 740 km and the revisit period of once in 5 days which is a unique opportunity of regular imaging of vast areas at such a high spatial resolution. The satellite also has LISS-3 sensor onboard which is very popular with the users due to the combination of rather wide swath (140 km) and a fair resolution (23 m).

The agreement between ScanEx RDC and ANTRIX Corporation Ltd was signed in November 2004 for the reception of IRS-P6 data.

Starting August 2006 ScanEx Center has been acquiring Cartosat-1 (IRS-P5) satellite stereo data of high resolution (2.5 m) created by the two-camera optical system (PAN-fore and PAN-aft). Those cameras downlink telemetry in pan mode with a swath width of about 30 km enabling to obtain along-track stereo images.

This year most updated areas based on Cartosat-1 data are the European Part and the Far East of the Russian Federation.

Starting 2006, ScanEx has been receiving images from SPOT 2 and SPOT 4 satellites to the network of its own ground receiving stations. These satellites deliver images of the Earth surface at the spatial resolution of 10 m in panchromatic and at 20 m in multispectral modes, with the swath of 60 km wide. SPOT 4 sensor has an additional short- wave infrared band, enabling to define different types of surface.

Most part of Russia has been covered with low-cloud images acquired from SPOT 2 and SPOT 4 satellites.

Reception of such colossal in range and volume coverages is possible thanks to the ScanEx’s commercial network of universal UniScan ground stations for remote sensing data reception.
