Image of the Week

The image received on October 4, 2018 from GeoEye-1, satellite shows Polessk — town with a population of more than 7,000 people, located in the Kaliningrad region of Russia on the left bank of the Deima River.

Near the town on the southern shore of the Curonian Lagoon of the Baltic Sea is the Northern Griva Forest and the village of Zalivino, a former fishing village Labagienen, where a lighthouse was built in 1868 and operated until the end of the 20th century. This is one of the three pre-war lighthouses preserved in the Kaliningrad region.

A few kilometers to the east of Polessk there is the village of Ilyichevo. It is famous for the private museum “Old German School Waldwinkel,” which recreates the atmosphere of the Eastern Prussia folk school. The museum is located in the original building of the German national school, built in 1890. Among the exhibits of the museum there is a school atlas, which was brought by one of the students of the school, returning it to its walls after 70 years. In the atlas there are photos from around the world, taken from the height of the airship flight.
