Kachkanar is a city with a population of more than 39 thousand people, located near one of the highest peaks of the Middle Urals — Mount Kachkanar (887.6 m), in the interfluve of the Is and Vija Rivers — the tributaries of the Tura (Ob River basin) 276 km north-west of Ekaterinburg.

The city was founded in 1957 to ensure the development of the Kachkanar field group. In 1958, the construction of the Main Career of the Kachkanar Ore Mining and Processing Plant began. Currently, Kachkanarskiy GOK is the only enterprise in the world that produces iron-vanadium concentrate, agglomerate and pellets for blast furnace smelting.
